Iran says recent development around JCPOA have nothing to do with responsibilities of IAEA’s Board of Governors

Tehran (SANATNAMA) – Iran called US’ request for holding an IAEA’s Board of Governors emergency meeting on Tehran’s nuclear program as a “bitter irony”.

“It is indeed a bitter irony that the concern about the JCPOA’s implementation is being raised by the very regime which has practically violated the deal through its illegal and unilateral withdrawal, and has pressured others to do the same, thereby hampering its implementation by the International Community through exerting every means of coercion,” Iran’s mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement, referring to recent statement released by US mission in Vienna.

“The fact that the US, as the first and main violator of the JCPOA, has made such a request indicates its isolation, which results from its opposition to multilateralism and the rule of law in international affairs,” the statement said.

“Iran’s recent decision to reduce its commitments under the JCPOA is in response to the situation created by the US and is aimed at restoring the lost balance to the accord,” it added.

“Moreover, the recent developments around the JCPOA have nothing to do with the responsibilities of the IAEA’s Board of Governors. Issues related to Iran nuclear deal will be discussed within the framework of designated mechanisms.”

Iran’s statement came as US mission to International Organizations based in Vienna called a special meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors to discuss recent development around Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

An IAEA spokesman announced on Friday that the meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s board of governors, which follows a US request, would be held on July 10.

Iran stresses that its decision to reduce its commitments under the JCPOA IS not in violation of the agreement as it fits within its rights under paragraphs 26 and 36 of the nuclear deal, and that it will reverse the decision once its demands are met.
