Iran’s Rouhani to visit New York: FM spokesman

Tehran (SANATNAMA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi stressed that he believed Iranian President Hassan Rouhani will attend the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York as the previous years.

Speaking in his weekly press conference on Monday, Qassemi said, “I believed President Rouhani will attend the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly and hold separate talks with some of his counterparts on the sidelines of the event as the previous years”.

“After completion of the necessary reviews and consultations, how and at what level Iran will attend a United Nations Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East will be announced,” he added.

The spokesman also emphasized that attack on Iranian consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra also the attack on Iranian embassy in Paris were two separate incidents and were not related to each other.

Ghasemi said, “The issue of Basra and the attack on our consulate were made by certain elements who tried to use a particular moment to influence the relations between the two nations and the internal developments in Iraq. The issue of Paris is another matter that was carried out by the terrorist group which failed and could not enter the embassy”.

He also told about news releases about the attack on the Iranian embassy in Greece: “I have no information about this issue right now and I'm not aware of the details of this news”.

“Iran is constantly in touch with Europe and is looking for some mechanisms which help Iran-Europe continue their economic relations,” Qassemi said about Iran-Europe relations.

“The previous plans were either not practical or didn’t have the required guarantees. Some alternative plans were proposed and now we are looking for mechanisms that help the economic collaborations between Iran and Europe,” he added.

Qasemi hoped that foreign ministers of Iran and the 4+1 (Britain, Russia, France and China plus Germany) will have a meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York to discuss ways to enter new phases.
